How do I know if it's violence?

Violence takes many shapes and forms and there is not a size that fits them all. Everyone's experience with violence is unique but there are some patterns you can look for.

Signs that someone is being abused by a family member include:
  • Controlling behaviour

  • Intimidation

  • Death threats

  • Strangulation and suffocation

  • Physical or sexual violence

  • Jealousy or possessiveness

  • Harassment

Children living in homes where there is domestic violence may:
  • Show signs of fear

  • Be quiet and withdrawn

  • Be aggressive

  • Be unusually well-behaved

  • Show signs of violence or bruises

  • Suddenly change their behaviour

  • Be frequently absent from school

People who experience domestic violence may:
