Neurodiversity

Support and resources for Latin American families with neurodivergent members

Raising neurodivergent children (such as those with ADHD, autism, or sensory processing differences) is a journey that can be both rewarding and challenging. For immigrant families, adapting to a new culture, system, and language can make this path even more complex.

We have lived it first-hand, and we want to help. These resources have been created by and for our community to share experiences, knowledge, and support with families walking a similar journey.

Autism

What is it?

Autism is a natural variation in the way the brain develops and the way it processes information. This means that autistic children experience, understand and interact with the world in particular ways.

It is not a mental illness, but a neurological difference - one of many variations of neurodiversity.

Myth and reality

Autism is a disease?

It is not an illness, it's just the way your brain works.” ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means something about brain development and function is different from that of a neurotypical child. But different doesn’t mean wrong, sick or broken.

Childhood vaccines cause autism?

Numerous studies by various researchers have consistently shown no link between vaccines and autism. Vaccinations are crucial for a child's safety and well-being. Just as parents provide shelter, safety, and proper nutrition, childhood vaccines protect against serious or potentially fatal diseases such as diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus, influenza, COVID-19, and whooping cough.

And more...

This list could go forever. There are so many myths and beliefs out there regarding Autism.  However the best you can do if you have doubts or questions, is to ask the experts. No question is dumb and a proper expert will answer them with empathy and kindness.
